Not anymore,there is another hack called bannerbomb,you dont need anything to buy,like a game or some hardware,just download the hackmii installer,put the elf in the root of sd card,download bannerbomb,put it in the sd card,and then follow README and enjoy There are different versions of bannerbomb,but with some luck you can find special package to install HBC (HomeBrew Channel) exactly for your firmware.Use google "How to install HBC on virgin <insert your firmware here>"
edit: but i still recommend buying the Zelda game,its good and you will donate the creators.

BannerBomb has like a 99.9% chance of success but their is like a 0.01% chance of a brick, i would personaly use Twilight As its 100% safe lol.
