new PS3

Hello,

I just got a PS3. Previously I have modded both wii's and psp's. Ive been looking around and am seeing it is possible to do the same with my ps3. Basically what I would like to do is be able to run homebrew, play emulated games and run backups(if possible).

I have seen people refer to a cfw and jailbreaking. What is the difference if any? What is the easiest way of going about this and is there a guide that is good?

Thanks in advance.

All depends on what firmware is installed on the PS3, what version are you running on it?

Well your options are these then

install 3.41 and use a jailbreak device to jailbreak the PS3

Install 3.55 then the custom 3.55 of your choice and enjoy life without a jailbreak device

Downgrade to 3.15 to regain original OtherOS fuctionality (slightly defunct option these days with AsbestOS floating about)

There is no jailbreak or CFW for 2.56 so unless you plan to use one of the bypass methods which sony claim to be banning for then you won't have PSN and the bypass i use doesn't let me play wipeout online anyway so i use it to sync trophies etc

http://psgroove.com/showthread.php?1879 ... ight=kmeaw will give you a guide on installing 3.55 CFW, they use kmeaw as an example but the process is pretty much the same for whatever option you choose just remember yyou MUST upgrade to sony's 3.55 first :)

http://www.ps3hax.net/2010/11/ps3-jailb ... z1F4QreVBr a guide to jailbreaking on 3.41 and below and covers a little bit about downgrading if you really want to use that option although not really needed anymore :)

Yeah it sounds like installing the 3.55 cfw is my best option as it seems to allow me to do what i want. Thanks a ton dude. you have been a big help.

So everything went ok. i got it down i think.

Only question i have left is do I have to run roms off a memory stick or can i copy them to the hard drive? seems like a waste to have 160 gigs if i cant do anything with it.

Most emulators will run off of a folder you pick, i have 1GB of SNES roms on my PS3 HDD and just tell the emulator where to look for them so assuming the emulator writer was smart then you should be able to run them from any location :)

Just to add to this, install something like Blackb0x FTP http://www.multiupload.com/MZS169965Q and use any FTP application of choice to transfer files to the PS3, i use Filezilla but any application will work :)

So yeah. I got my roms copied to the hard drive using the awesome file manager. Which pretty much answered all my questions about getting stuff to that harddrive. Thanks for that.

So Ive got an nes and snes emulator working fine but when I try and run the genesis plus gx v1.2 emulator it fails to start up. Ive tried 2 different downloads of it. is this a common problem? im running the cfw 3.55 kmeaw version.

Thanks in advance for any advice.

Not sure not tried that specific emulator, but make sure you're grabbing the signed for 3.55 version as apps signed for 3.41 will fail to start

Unless you own a backwards compatible PS3 i.e one of the early release models then the answer is no, they lack the hardware to run the PS2 games :(
