Here is another article I borrowed from ps3-hacks. It's not really modification but it is handy.

PS3-Hacks Link

CJPC has released an incredibly useful application for the PS3 using the OtherOS Open Platform concept. PS3 Swiss Army Knife (SAK), appropriately titled, provides a web interface that enables the following:

* Check Blu-Ray Disk size
* Format internal PS3 HDD
* Back-up iSO to internal PS3 HDD
* Back-up iSO to external EXT3 HDD
* Back-up iSO via wired network, to Windows Network Share
* Explore HDD (Linux side), and download files to a PC.
* Explore Blu-Ray Disks, and download files to a PC (with UDF 2.5 Support!)
* Reboot console
* Reboot console to PS3 GameOS
* Poweroff console

Note: With SAK v1.00 you can now dump your PS3/Blu-Ray disc images without installing PS3 Linux, however, you must still format the PS3 HDD prior (as if you were going to install PS3 Linux) in order to install/use the OtherOS– this is a $ony requirement unfortunately.

How to install: using a memory or USB stick, or CD-R, etc… Copy “otheros.bld” (included in the RAR archive) & “otheros.self” (see below) to “/PS3/OTHEROS/”. Insert your removable media and from the XMB (Settings -> System Settings) run “Install Other OS.” Set the default boot to OtherOS, reboot, and you should be good to go.

If you require further assistance, have a look at Sony’s official Open Platform web site.

You can fetch the PS3 OtherOS Installer (otheros.self) here.

Oh so they figured out how to dump PS3 games and play the backups? I'm not sure if it will harm the system, probably not, im not sure where the files are going to, maybe to the 'flash' or something. I think as long as you don't turn off your system or as long as the power goes out or something, you should be ok.

Dumping a game runs no risk at all about bricking. All you are doing is making a copy of the game. Since we really don't have a way to mod the PS3 yet I don't think you have to worry about brickage too much.

So can you play the ripped Blu-ray disc files on the PS3?

I haven't tried it yet but supposedly yes. You can download Bluray game torrents all over the net...but I think its a waste of time. 50GB is a huge download, you probably don't have a bluray burner, the only way to house them and play them then is from an external HDD and on a 500GB drive you will only hold 10 games....LOL. Just seems like a waste of time to me.

Haha yea thats true, I don't plan on downloading and storing PS3 games when you can play them. And I can just play .DivX movies instead of the bluray ones.

Its not even a mod though... all it is is a linux boot disk hacked down to just some needed utilities.

Swiss Army Knife? Obviously, its a knife used by the military, but is it possible that they can use other knife other than that?

seeing as though this was revived, is it possible to dump games to the internal ps3 hard drive, then play them off of it?

I believe it's possible to dump PS3 games through "Other OS". That happened well over a year ago. Some PS3 game dumps were floating around the net, and that's how we were able to tell that developers weren't taking advatage of bluray since the 25 GB discs only had 7-9 GB of game data on them originally.

But there was no way to play them, and there probably won't be any way to play burned blurays for a while, so there was no point in dumping the games and why they don't float around on the net anymore.
