Hey, guys. Some people here might remember me from pspbrew.com.
It's PSP_Man. Yeah, yeah, i know--it's been a long time.

Anyways, so i just got my first ps3 (WOOHOO!! ) and I have tons of
questions...but for now...

1. should i update my ps3, or is it like the psp where once you update, you're f**k?
2. is there any way of playing backed up games directly from the hard drive?

1) Nope, it doesn't really affect it that I know of.
2) I have heard that you can play PS3 backups but I don't think it is public yet.. lemme find an article.

May I suggest some very worthy games:
Call of Duty 4
Elder Scrolls IV: Oblivion
Metal Gear Solid 4!

I've just started playing Resistance: Fall of Man and it is pretty good. I think 10 games are now in the Greatest Hits section of the PS3 such as
Elder Scrolls IV: Oblivion
Rainbow Six: Vegas
Resistance: Fall of Man
Assassin's Creed
Warhawk
and Ninja Gaiden Sigma and a few others.

The PS3 greatest hits are set at $29.99.

you again, bud. And hell yeah! I have MGS4. it's what I
bought the playstation for!!

And definitely, Devil May Cry is going to be the second game
that I buy. I was thinking that if I can backup isos to my hard drive
and play them directly, i can just rent them and back them up.
That would be a lot easier and more efficient than having to load
the disc up each time, have longer load times AND paying the
60-some dollars for the game.

I've only paid $60 for one game , that was Metal Gear Solid 4. The games go on sale all the time, some $10-$20 off.
