i would like to have it so my ps2 can play backed up games off of a hard drive. Can someone knowlegable of how to do this give me some detail or a link to a tutorial of how to do this? I would also like to know if this requires any extensive hard-modding of the ps2.

For starters you will need a moded PS2.

If you do not have one, you will need to be able to solder 20 wires on points the size of a pin head with wire barely thicker than a human hair.

Theres a much easier 'startup disk' method right?

All you have to do I think is get this 'start-up' disk and stick it in your ps2, then stick in a cd with a game on it and you can play it. But this doesn't include the HD games I don't think. I'm not sure how it all works.

There are many methods to crack a PS2.

There is a disk swap and a memory card exploit too. I prefer using the chips myself especially the DMS pro because it has extra memory to hold and run programs from the chip itself. With the right operating system the chip will even load the hard drive for you. No disk required!

I do not like Disk Swaps because you have to do them every time you reset the machine or there is an error reading the disk. With the memory card exploit you have to put in your "special" home made disk every time you load to allow homebrew.

I would rather not mess with either of the mentioned methods (there are others) and unfortunately for someone that may or may not like to read I would recommend finding a modded box or finding someone to install a chip for you. The local universities and colleges would be a good place to start looking for someone.

Anyhow I am not up to date on the latest methods, my knowledge is about 2 years old. Both of my PS2s work and someday I might swap the chips. We will see how much time I have to give up.

In this case it is a fatty. I know the DMS4 chips work on any model PS2.

Only the fat PS2 will accept a hard drive. There is a way to have a Slim accept a hard drive via the USB port but as of last year no PS2 games could be played from it. I do not know if this has changed because I do not keep up with it much anymore.

You guys do know you can either use the old memory card "softmod" trick or use one of the various HDD tools that used to be available on cd's a while ago don't you? I used to be into modding my ps2 for a while, I will try and dig up some of my old links for memory card tricks, apps and other things for HDD managment. I do know one website I used to visit started with an s or had an s in the name

Can the slim model read any USB drive? or no?

Is it possible to stick some kind of program file on a USB drive that will make the PS2 read it?

I was into the USB on a slim PS2 thing last year and at that time you could access files but you could not run backups on a slim. My USB drive was a 150 gig Western Digital Passport.

I gave the drive away last week and I have had no desire to fire up or mess with my PS2 since last year.

So I do not know if anything has changed. I am really burned out on it right now.

dang, how much would a 150 g usb drive cost?

I was going to look forward to modding my ps2 sometime as well, but I found out there is no N64 emulator for it so I'll pass.
