The World of Facebook

This week Facebook rolled out the latest of its new features: Facebook Chat. Now, I think most people will agree that not everything Facebook has added has been in its best interests -- applications seem to be reminiscent of the clutter of MySpace. But Facebook Chat seems to be a rather forward-moving development for what is quickly becoming a monopoly over internet communication. They now essentially have MySpace, MSN, Email, Message boards, Ebay, Youtube, calendars, and even more all wrapped up in a single package.

Now, I have to admit that like many other students, I'm known to check my Facebook often. For me, the draw is the ability to maintain connections. And with the amount of computers nowadays, I know that I can get a message to someone quickly if there isn't another way to contact them. Though this new Facebook Chat definitely impacted my studying the other night as I got the chance to speak with an old friend for the first time in months.

So...Facebook. What do you think of its direction? The features? etc. This isn't a MySpace v Facebook topic.

Its good for a social networking site, but think of it this way: If you're logged on to aim all the time why bother?

Facebook's apps still won't keep my from using my PSP or chatting on the phone, not to mention that most apps are asinine(e.g. Have Sex, Super Poke).
The one good thing about facebook is the movie quizzes floating around.
But still, nothing seperates Facebook from Myspace, Bebo, and whatever else they're all the same, with the same vocabulary ignorant GED spelling (L)users.

well i've watched a good interview with the creator of facebook and his main goal is to make facebook basically its own entity on the internet as a main hub for social connection between humans all across the internet. (this was also the creator of the internet's goal I believe, as well as having a place where information could be readily available to all)

and im not sure if everyone knows this, but all those little add-on features are made by users, not by facebook itself (except for big things like this new chat) there is a development tool that facebook has so that anyone can create their own feature (which is going to become a huge security threat in my opinion at some point)

I personally think its stupid and annoying to see all these facebooks with endless amounts of images, quizes, etc. its just a bunch of clutter. but i mean if thats what people want to put on their facebook and enjoy using them then thats fine, cause thats what they were created for is enjoyment.
But on my personal facebook i don't have anything added-on and keep my information to a minimum (which is also a bad thing people do online is they basically tell every detail of their life and display it to anyone, people even put their address up on facebook, I don't think people realize how bad of an idea that is)

Verify your school? I have never heard of that only your email address.

not sure if you are new to facebook, but it use to be for college students only (you had to use your official college e-mail in order to register for facebook) and i believe if your school wasn't on the list of schools that they had networks created for on the site, then you couldn't register either

ace: Do you people not read rules????!!!??? Don't double post! Sheese!

I don't know how to make it so I'm apart of my school. I can find it, but I don't know how to become part of it.
I really hate facebook.

Not like, okay, "It's okay." But like, "I hate it."
Haha.

Any website set up like facebook I hate. It's too jumbled and it seems like its made to be more complicated than it should be.
Another reason for my hatred for it is because it's becoming Yahoo.
Yahoo wants to be a one stop website, having everything. (AOL is getting this way too) Some of the things are useful, but it's too complicated for how simple it should be.
Google has way more stuff than Yahoo but it's simplicity makes it barable.

I actually didn't have time to read your post.
I love myspace actually. It's a great website.
It's becoming more and more like facebook though.
And I completely agree when you say the movie quiz thingy.
I hate those. I hate getting "take a movie quiz request" or a "super zombie kiss poke request."
I hate them, I hate them all. I have like no apps added to mine because they are just completely absurd.
I'm tired of getting 30 requests a day for things that I would never, ever, use.

I for one HATE facebook. More so than myspace.

But yes I would agree that this facebook chat look to be kind of neat. Though I haven't used it yet.

I think the chat feature only represents more ways for facebook to get into trouble.

i like facebook and myspace. they both have great features and allow u to talk to ur friends. if it wasnt for myspace, then i wouldnt talk to my friends in florida. but i like and think myspace is better because it is more popular. i mean all my firends in florida dont have a facebook. but EVERYONE has a myspace. its like if u dont have a myspace ur wierd. haha. its and easy way to communicate and keep in contact with ur friends. i check my myspace about twice a day. its so convienient. and now u can go on myspace whenever u want on ur phones and stuff. i just cant wait to see wut the future brings...
