What do you have against Pun and crait?! :-(
But for real, it is the power of each to decide for themselves based on voting if it should be legalized and I think it should be.
BKF, do you want me telling you how and who you should marry?

I don't care where people are born or raised or what religious substructure they've been indoctrinated into. Gay people should have the right to marriage, whether specifically called marriage or not. Any particular religion may scorn on homosexuality, and that's fine, but that doesn't stop a homosexual from being part of any religion or include them as someone who believes what they do either.

There are a lot of people, in particular, Christians, who believe that marriage is solely between a man and woman. The Bible depicts it this way, that much is true. But even The Bible doesn't have a great "reason" to be married in the first place.

If you're a Christian and outright fully believe that marriage is between a man and woman, then you MUST 100% believe the following as well (because this cites the original purpose of marriage).

Gen. 2:18, 21-24 wrote:The Lord God said, 'It is not good for the man to be alone. I will make a helper suitable for him'...and while he was sleeping, he took one of the man's ribs and closed up the place with flesh. Then the Lord God made a woman from the rib he had taken out of the man, and he brought her to the man. The man said, 'This is now bone of my bones and flesh of my flesh; she shall be called 'woman,' for she was taken out of man.' For this reason a man will leave his father and mother and be united to his wife, and they will become one flesh.

So The Bible's REASON for marriage is to create a "helper" for a man. This person, woman, who comes from the rib of a man, is to be held as a submissive counterpart and be with the man because "it is not good for man to be alone".

So the REASON for marriage is for companionship, for a partner, to be loved as you love the Lord. But even The Bible recognizes that marriage may not be a good thing in the first place:

Corinthians 7:1-2 wrote:... It is good for a man not to marry. But since there is so much immorality, each man should have his own wife, and each woman her own husband.

So tell me then, if there is so much immorality in our world, as noticed and recognized by The Bible, and since The Bible's depiction and reasoning for marriage being an institution in the first place is all derivatively based on partnership and love, wouldn't it make sense to allow gay marriage? We're in the year 2011 now. We shouldn't close our ears and pretend that gay people aren't capable of loving the same sex as themselves just because "we", as straight people, don't "love" our same sex companions as they do. And I use those terms loosely, of course, since I know BKF likes boys anyways :D

Da Cool Man, they can if they adopt or have kids from a previous relationship.
DarkPacMan77, you bring up some good points but I think I need to clarify. First of all, you're right in the sense that just because one religion doesn't recognize it, doesn't mean that all religions should not or cannot recognize it. Second, I don't understand where there is much room to ask if a man and man can marry because it specifically says man should have a wife and a woman should have a husband. I think you're getting two things mixed up, anyways. If marriage should only be based on love and that's why you believe gay marriage should be legalized, then it should be illegal for two people to get married who don't love each other. I.E. Anna Nicole Smith.

i agree with you on that point crait if you get married for love then all other marriages should be outlawed but of course that wouldnt stop tehs shotgun weddings going on down here :P (50% of the chicks i would have graduated with got married right out of highschool at the point of a shotgun literally) and as i have stated before gays should have the right to marry and have kids whether they adopt or have soem from a previous relationship i just dont think its right for certain parties to tell other people who they can and cannot legally marry (although in the south thank the gods that there are those laws trust me on this one :P)

Ron Paul said this....
I have been married to my wife for 57 years. We are happy together. I don't want anyone to tell me who I can marry or tell me my marriage is wrong. That's why I won't do it to other people.

Sure, I agree. It should be. However, there is no such way to mandate such a thing. There isn't a test for love. I mean, just the fact that the system of marriage already incorporates a clause in which you can decide beforehand what happens to dividends, assets and property in the case of a breakup is more than enough for me to assume that marriage is not a concrete contractual basis to begin with. I mean, why have marriage, in the traditional Christian sense, but then sign a prenuptial agreement? Shouldn't THAT be illegal? I'd say no, and I think most people would say no, which means there is still a bias against gay individuals, and that's just wrong.

I often also find that the same people that think that same-sex couples shouldn't raise children also believe that being homosexual is something that those individuals are born with. In which case, all humans are born of both man and woman, inherently and genetically indifferent to their assumed foster parents, who may be gay. Therefor, those same-sex parents shouldn't be able to "coerce" that child... right? Or do they fear that they will abuse them sexually? Because, I'm positive that, statistically speaking, straight men and women sexually abuse younger boys and girls at a far higher rate than homosexuals. And in that case, I'm actually defending the Church.

The reason they should be able to get married has very little to do with love and religion. And more to do with the laws we have and their wording.

"domestic partners" and "marriage" are not equal.

How would a "domestic partnership" affect divorce? how about inheritance? what if a gay gentleman's "domestic partner" dies in combat for our country? Nothing. The partner is lucky to receive a phone call.

You can talk and complain all day about how the government should stay out of marriage but since the early 50's the government has affected marriage. Encouraging the nuclear family. Many benefits are given to "Married Couples". Not so with domestic partners.

All this religious nonsense is just another way to keep different people down. I'm tired of it frankly. Marriage is a word. A WORD. 50% or more marriages fail. Yea real sacred. calling it a domestic partnership is messing with language and we do that too much.
