I don't think a firmware update would do anything, you would need a new drive, because the way the blu ray drive reads disks, is different then the ps2.

Well, the PS3 can read DVDs..... So add a little emulation and i dont see why not

Well they are suppose to add PS2 games to the PS Store, so that part of playing PS2 games is unrelated to disc playback.
