Since you have 2.71, you can downgrade your PSP.

Follow this tutorial and all should be well. We'll upgrade your PSP after you report a sucessful downgrade.

You can technically "brick" the psp, resulting in it powering on, but never showing anything on the screen/ working.

The goal, would be to use that tutorial to downgrade (that you were referred to) and then upgrade to a custom firmware. The custom firmwares have a neat feature called recovery mode, so when you are doing something dangerous next time, and you DO brick your psp, it can still be fixed!

Just make sure that you follow any instructions you were given very very closely, and read them through a few times so that you are familiar with them.
