Sony response to homebrew community.

Has Sony made any lucid response to the homebrew community? In my field, they are supporting Linux on the PS3 and suggesting that scientific and life science (bioinformatic) software be written for the Cell BE core. It seems that they should have an official position for homebrew developers.

IBM, Sony, and Terra Soft here in Colorado are all teamed up to support development. I feel like the FW updates for PSP are used to prevent application development. It is a shame, the PSP could be a really useful handheld platform with excellent graphical capabilities and WiFi.

It actually had a lot to do with "General Chat" regarding the whole homebrew community surrounding the PSP. I imagine, since I used punctuation and sentences, that it was hard to read. What Sony FW are you suggesting that I respond to? The conversation that I was attempting to stimulate was one of Sony's support for running differing operating systems on one platform while stifling development on another.

from the download section on this page

The real changes in the firmware seem to be quite deep though. In the last couple of hours, people have tried decrypting the firmware and have failed. While this would be expected, it seems that this time, even the updater keys have been changed. This can mean that all firmwares below 1.52 won't be able to upgrade directly since they don't have they keys to decrypt the update.

The other thing which caught my eye is that Sony could have modified the updater to write the firmware differently. I've already heard rumors that people who've tried to upgrade their downgraded TA-082/TA-086 PSPs have bricked, so whoever is in that group, don't think of updating anytime soon.

Can you imagine how pissed the Tech's at Sony have to be when all the time and research they spend on making the new firmware un-hackable..then it's turned around and hacked the crap out of and made better than what they have?

ANd really, so what if they release a firmware that cant be hacked? I don't see myself updating from 3.03 oe-c unless something REALLY cool comes out.. which, honestly, I can't think of anything else I want out of my PSP. As far as I'm concerned, I'm done updating.

Even though I love having homebrew on my PSP, I feel bad that PSP ISO's are so freely distributed, because, in all honesty, it's hurting PSP sales, no matter what anybody says. Ultimately, I belive the Homebrew Community (which I am part of) will be the demise of our beloved handheld. The only thing that's gonna save it is if Sony breaks bad and developes firmwares that aren't hackable..which, thats proven very difficult to do.

I think Sony should hire Dark Alex to make firmwares for them...kinda like that move w/Tom Hanks and DeCaprio: Catch me if you can. (good movie if you've never seen it). That dude was brilliant and now works for the government he scammed so badly.

Damn, I'm wordy :P AND I used punctuation and spelling stuff :P

Sony severely limited themselves with their 32mb flash limit... it should definitely be more than that so that they can keep this system alive b/c now that they are reaching closer to their limit... I wonder just how many more beneficial things are able to fit on the flash. Sony's updates stop piracy and usually add another codec for something... how lame. Where are the features? I still don't see a chottoshotto in North America... I mean, I wanted it really badly... but I just couldn't wait that long. I wanted to take pictures so I got a digital camera.

Sony is missing out by being so slow. I agree with mac 24 seven... I just don't see any way possible that Sony could ever make me interested in an official firmware version again... I mean, I have everything and more than what I wanted right now. The ONLY thing I can think about that Sony could do is create a good enough game that is worth updating, and I really don't think that will happen for a long time... I just don't have faith in the umd games so much anymore.

I have to agree. It makes no sense to continue the updates that offer no content. (Where are the organizer functions?) That is my point. Since they continue to waste the limited space they have, Sony should support the ability to modify and retrofit the product as the user sees fit. Not to mention that the average PSP firmware developer probably wouldn't mind writing something new functional instead of closing holes that Fanjita has discovered.

Sony has a long history of being anti-piracy, but they are alienating a group that seems to have fresh ideas and an interesting, creative grasp on the PSP in a failed attempt to stop people from misusing game software.

As I am sitting here, I guess they could have jumped on the PS3/Linux bandwagon to sell more PS3s. I doubt that is the case though, considering who they are pushing the CellBE system on. (Scientists etc.)

It wont ever stop lol.
By the way Sony doesnt even care about the applications that will run on the PS3. They want linux for features.

Well it is obvious that the firmware versions will stop when the psp is not being sold... and if I had to take a guess I would say that the updates would probably stop at version... 5.80... perhaps 6.00. It'd be neat if it stopped at 4.20 though.

i dont wanna think about it

i dont wanna think about it if sony stops making firmware its for 1 of 2 possibal reasons.
1 sony has blocked all security holes and homebrew is not possibal at the higher firmwares.
2 the psp is no longer in production and is no longer supported (when that happens no new games).
