My friend has recently downloaded a file that has a password, and it didn't come with a readme.txt file or anything. It has a password and has no information as to what it is. Is there a way to bypass the password? - a decryptor of sorts? I've looked but turned up nothing, so any help would be appreciated.

Where did he download the file? he should be able to find the password from the source.

Its usually the username of the person hosting the file. So wherever he downloaded it from try using that persons user name.
By the way if it came with a readme in the rar/zip you would need a password to access that as well.

search the area you got it from, find something relevant to it and find a forum dedicated to that, post the file there and see if anyone has the password. otherwise youre going to spending a very very very very very very long time cracking it.
