Upgrade from 1.5 to a CFW; 5.00m33 is an excellent choice.
M33 has about 3 diferent NoUMD modes, so you can run ISOs from a memory stick without a disc in.
Otherwise, you don't need a UMD for anything (Even without NoUMD mode, or CFW for that matter)

If you check out psp-hacks.com, you can find a a utility to install a custom firmware, providing that your PSP is actually still at version 1.50 (not 1.51). Otherwise you might have to upgrade to another version to use other exploits or make yourself a pandora battery and magic memory stick. Even though you could potentially move to a custom firmware without the pandora setup, I highly recommend making it to have on hand. I'm sure many people will say they have used theirs several times to fix their PSP when something went wrong.

You're new to the homebrew scene, obviously.
Welcome.
You don't need a laser at all to play homebrew on the PSP.
I'd suggest to update to 5.00M33-3.
If you are a real wiz at PSP's then I'd suggest staying at 1.5. In my opinion it was the best version of PSP compatibility-wise but it's really outdated because there's few people who have 1.5 PSP's.

If i get 5.00M33-3 or any other cfw can i go back down to 1.5??

I dabbled in the homebrew scene a LONG time ago, back when 2.0 was the latest firmware.
But yeah since my laser died, and i used my PSP so little, its not worth $40 for a new laser so i thought id come here :)

yup, you can always return to 1.50 firmware from any of the custom firmwares.

Yeah, if an error popped up, you probably tried running a program made for the newer firmwares that's incompatible with yours.
Update to 5.0 M33-3 :D
