OnLive: Cloud-Based Gaming Service

One of the most fantastic gaming devices/ services I recognized from this year's E3 conference was "OnLive". OnLive is a play on the word, "online", and for fully-justifiable reasons. With OnLive, any compatible device that can connect and run the OnLive client with at least a download rate of 5mb/s will be able to play HD gaming content wherever they have internet access. The content is streamed through the client to whatever independent device that is compatible with the service and then is able to play HD content on that device.

At E3, the game shown off as a working title was Borderlands, an exceptional first-person shooter MMO game. The device that the game was played on was none other than Apple's new iPad, a device known for being "just a large iPod touch".

Microsoft has been questioned for a long time about making a hand-held gaming device and have dodged questions. Now, it seems that they are at least a little bit closer to providing such a device. Now, however, it seems any device capable of creating a method of input, like the iPad's touch screen or perhaps a USB peripheral gaming controller (not mentioned, but to be expected) will be able to stream HD gaming content that looks just as great as the modern gaming generation as played on Xbox 360 - but seemingly limitless.

This type of technology truly brings to question the concept of the future of hand-held devices and battery power consumption standards. For me, personally, I look at this type of technology and see visions of the 90's when Sega Channel was still pumping.

Gran Turismo 5 Expected Features + Release Date?

GT5

Gran Turismo 5 has had more than its fair share of delays. Now, in spite of those delays, the game seems to be slated for a November 2nd release, but I think it's more appropriate to just say "November".

The newest installment will feature new courses; Madrid, Tuscany, Rome, Nurburgring, and even the TopGear test track that "The Stig" is often seen driving various cars on the hit European television show, TopGear, are welcome delights. The game boasts a grand total that exceeds 1,000 vehicles to choose from, 800 of which are dubbed "standard" cars. The rest, assumably, will reside in the category dubbed, "premium" cars. Cars in that category will reap all of the best benefits that Gran Turismo 5 has to offer such as photo-realistic dashboard/ interiors and on-the-fly vehicle damage which is sectional and appropriate according to where you received damage. It is unknown, at this time, as to whether or not the other 800 cars will feature sectional damage or even generalized damage as we've seen in trailers and hands-on previews so far.

From a graphical perspective, Gran Turismo 5 will most likely lock-down the title of being the racing game with the best visuals. Every car will utilize the PS3's pixel shader to the limit, allowing for other visuals which also enhance the game overall. Things like collision sparks, time of day changes, low/ high beams on the cars, smoke illumination, and even the ability to kick up debris from the car are all things that will help bring a better and more involving gaming experience to the player. The game will have support for both 3D televisions and also face-tracking with the PS3 camera. The online mode is extensive and should leave gamers begging for more.

E3 2010: Games You May Have Overlooked

E3 2010's now officially behind us, and there was a ton to talk about. Between Nintendo announcing the 3DS, Sony showing off the Playstation Move, and Microsoft announcing the 'slimline' XBox360, it was easy to overlook the actual games. Two have me very excited, though: One that was shown during Microsoft's press conference, the other was actually released before E3, but its released was somewhat overshadowed by the big show.

Child Of Eden: The 'sequel' of sorts to the cult-classic Dreamcast (and now XBLA) title 'Rez', Child of Eden is a game that's not so much about the challenge of boss battles or time trials, but a game about the experience. You 'conduct' the action on-screen, making amazing beats that are accompanied by beautiful HD visuals. It'll work with Microsfot Kinect, Playstation Move, or a regular controller, so there's no reason you should miss out on Tetsuya Mizuguchi's upcoming masterpiece.

Metal Gear Solid: Peace Walker: A full-fledged Metal Gear Solid, MGS: Peace Walker takes place several years after both Metal Gear Solid 3 and MGS: Portable Ops. In this installment, Big Boss is recruiting soldiers for Outer Heaven, which he considers a 'paradise for soldiers'. Extremely lore-heavy, and remarkably well-directed for a handheld title, Peace Walker doesn't disappoint, and any Metal Gear fan would be foolish to miss out.

Many thanks to our friends GameTrailers and G4TV for the great video clips. What games caught your eye at this year's E3? Let us know by stopping by our forums!

3.21 Firmware comes April 1st. Removes Other OS support.

PS3 Firmware 3.21 will be available this Thursday. It will disable the “Install Other OS” feature that was available on the PS3 systems prior to the current slimmer models, launched in September 2009. This feature enabled users to install an operating system, but due to security concerns, we’re now removing this feature.

For most of you, this won’t have any impact on how you use your PS3. If you are one of the few who use the “Other OS” feature, or if you belong to an organisation that does, then you can choose not to upgrade your system. However, doing so will mean that the following features will not be available:

  • Ability to sign in to PlayStation Network and use network features that require signing in to PlayStation Network, such as online features of PS3 games and chat.
  • Playback of PS3 software titles or Blu-ray Disc videos that require PS3 system software version 3.21 or later.
  • Playback of copyright-protected videos that are stored on a media server (when DTCP-IP is enabled under Settings).
  • Use of new features and improvements that are available on PS3 system software 3.21 or later.

If you currently use the “Other OS” feature and you wish to update to system software 3.21, make sure you back-up any data stored within the hard drive partition used by the “Other OS,” as they will not be able to access that data following the update.

8001050F Plagues The Fatties

What a crazy day for the PS3. Sony apparently has no idea what is the reason behind just about every single one of their customers not being able to connect to the Playstation Network. The errors occurred early afternoon (PST) and they kept on coming. There may be only one answer during these dark times and although the prospect of spending time without your video games and instead investing it with your loved ones and families... the answer may be to buy an Xbox 360. No, of course that's a cheap shot, but it makes you wonder what is exactly going on?

The rampant speculation about "Sony phasing out the fatties" is already hitting the airwaves. I, personally, feel it's just a typical server downtime and whether planned or not should return to optimal working status within hours, but some people would rather believe it's judgment day. Kotaku and Gizmodo have both picked up on the story so far with nothing much to add other than "nobody seems to know what is going on", although, oddly enough, it seems that most people who claim to have a slim PS3 are experiencing no issues at all... which may prove that Sony hates black fatties.

3D Technology May Come Next for PS3

Our good pal and forum friend, AdventWolf, tipped us off about this little bit of tech news. Jumping straight in, for a few years this type of 3D technology has been being developed - originally targeting the PC gaming scene through Nvidia. The technology released was dubbed, "Geforce 3D Vision". Interestingly enough, for those who don't know, the PS3's graphics processor, the "RSX", is created by Nvidia, so this type of 3D technology has only been an earshot away from being used with the PS3. It was just a matter of time. Now, it seems, that technology may become a new feature with the upcoming firmware release, 3.20. Currently at firmware 3.15, if speculation holds true, it shouldn't be long before people are able to download a simple firmware update to possibly take hold of some great extra graphical features.

The downside? Yes, there is a downside. The downside is that you're going to need a 120hz television/ computer monitor in order to experience this extra feature - something only the big spenders currently have access to. The monitor will need to be a native 120hz screen unless you purchase something like a Mitsubishi DLP monitor which come with the necessary hardware to boot. The DLP TV's may only need to be set to 60hz as well even though they support 120hz and overall may support higher resolutions (1680x1050 for a standard 120hz LCD compared to 1920x1080 for a DLP HDTV). I suppose it may also be considered to be a downside that you will need to wear 3D glasses also - something which some people may not appreciate.

For now, most of this is rumor and speculation, but now that this information is coming mostly from developers that have hands-on access to the newest firmware update, this news seems pretty likely to be an upcoming release that may add some extra functionality to your PS3.

Site Downtime

We're terribly sorry for the recent downtime the site has incurred, but we've been hard at work to bring the site back up. We've had issues with a few things including hosting issues as well as a bit extra, which I've outlined in our forum, but we're back now and we're working hard towards being better than ever before. Keep your eyes peeled for a forum update within the next few days that will include a section for average members to post news for the website in. That news can be taken and posted up by a staff member, giving full credits to the user, of course, and will be a great way that the community can take part in making the site a better place.

Also, it's HIGHLY advised to enter the Brewology Network through www.Brewology.com instead of using one of the mirrors like WiiBrew or PSPBrew because we're going to be adding news posts that are specific to the Brewology page itself about the latest tech trends and what-not and the only way to see such information is to enter the site through www.Brewology.com. Doing this will also filter the news from every aspect of our site into one convenient page for you to view! So please, if you haven't already, make sure to add the Brewology page to your bookmarks or homepage or just plain enter it in when accessing the site.

Thanks for everything folks. Again, sorry for the downtime, but welcome back to the Brew!

PS3 Getting Some New Colored Controllers in October

Colours

Pretty, huh? I think so too. Sony released the silver-colored Dualshock 3 controllers earlier this year in the U.S. and other parts of the world and white was released a while back. I ordered in a white controller off of eBay around Christmas of last year nad it looks great for you guys who haven't seen a different colored controller than black. Sony stated that they will be released around October but no word yet on pricing. My guess is about $50 USD like the other colors.

Kojima Production

Teaser 1

A few days ago Kojima put up what seemed to be a simple flash teaser, showing only a grassy field under a thick blanket of clouds, with a fence and sparse forest on the right and left. Now that the first countdown has been reached, it looks like a new one is counting down. As well as the clouds are moving much faster and there is lightning and thunder in the background, and a mysterious number or letter 5/S. What caught my attention was that "Raiden" in Japanese means "Thunder and Lightning!" But for right now we will have to wait until we actually find out what it means. But right now it doesn't look like its ending any time soon. Many people have been going through all of the source code of the flash and it looks like the countdown will continue. 5/18 (Today), 5/22 (This timer ends, new one starts), 5/27 (Timer #3), 5/30 (Timer #4), and 6/1 (First Day of E3, also Microsoft Press Conference.) But don't get your hopes up 360 Fan boys, Hideo Kojima himself said there will not be a game / remake of a game for the 360. So right now we are just going to have to wait it out!

Final Fantasy XIII producer thinking about downloadable content?

Square Enix producer Yoshinore Kitase has told VideoGamers.com that Square Enix has "no plan" to release a disc-based demo for Final Fantasy XIII in the States. The demo, bundled with certain copies of the Blu-ray release of Final Fantasy VII: Advent Children Complete, thrust PS3 to the top of the Japanese sales charts, and became the best-selling anime Blu-ray in Japan. While including a demo with the upcoming US release of the movie seems like a no-brainer, Kitase explained that a PS3-exclusive demo would be unfair to the Western audience that's also expecting an Xbox 360 demo. "We are going to carry on with the project alongside the Xbox version, so we really can't just make it available only for the PS3," he explained.

Kitase then noted that the company "would like to check" on the possibility of a downloadable demo. We're certain the logistics behind delivering a 5GB demo to the PSN/XBL masses will be quite difficult to figure out.

VidZone invites music videos to the PS3 this summer

Remember VidZone? You probably don't, seeing as we haven't heard anything about the music video service for the PS3 since it was announced at the Leipzig Game Convention last year. It's not dead, though. The service is ready to go live this summer in the UK, Ireland, France, Italy, Germany, Spain and Australia.

VidZone will be a completely free, though ad-supported, way of watching music videos on demand. It will allow you to create playlists of streaming videos either from your PS3 itself or from your PSP via remote play. The service will feature "thousands of music videos and live concert videos, as well as behind the scenes, interviews and making of footage."

There's no word on how often the service will be updated, but we would hope that more content is added on a fairly regular basis. VidZone is Europe and Australia exclusive, with seemingly no plans to bring it to the US.

Patapon shirts available on Home this week

This Thursday, May 6, is the release date for the digital release of Patapon 2. It's also the day on which you can show off your love for Patapon clothing within Home. They'll be available from the Threads store in the mall, free or not, we don't know yet. Acting as walking billboards is one thing, without having to pay for the pleasure.

Check it out this Thursday on your local PS Home store.

Capcom ready to release dozen+ PS1 and PSP titles on PSN

Capcom is going to make its PlayStation Network presence a lot more robust as it begins releasing ports of PS1 titles and providing downloadable versions of previous PSP titles throughout the year. The company spoke with Capcom's Chris Kramer, who let us know that the company would be listening to what the community wants and figuring out internally what titles to release but don't expect any of them to involve licensing shenanigans along the lines of Marvel vs. Capcom.

"We'll definitely be looking at a lot of titles that have things like Street Fighter and Resident Evil in the title," Kramer said. "We're thinking about putting together a long list of the titles we're looking at, and then releasing it on Capcom Unity and having people vote on them. Ultimately we're looking at bringing between 20 and 40 titles to the PSN over the next several months."

Spyro receives rating for PS3 and PSP

The ESRB rating site has gone on rating a few more of the upcoming PS1 releases for the PSN Store. Spyro 2 and Spyro: Year Of The Dragon are both listed as being approved for the PlayStation 3 and PSP.

With titles like WipEout, Street Fighter Alpha 2 and 3, not having been listed for months and, in some cases, over a year, we're not expecting to see these Spyro games soon. If at all. The only thing is that when they rate the games, it sits there and waits. I am not quiet to sure about this one being anytime soon though, but would be a nic addition to the PS games on the PSN.

It is nice to see it being rated though. What do you guys think? Would you like this game to come out any time soon?
