Small networking issue is for PS3 <-> PS3 you'll need a crossover cable instead of a patch cable, you can play LAN games over wireless its no different than using a wired connection
So network setups will either need to be
PS3 <-> PS3 using a crossover cable
PS3 -> Switch/router <- PS3 with standard ethernet cables
PS3 -> Wireless AP <- PS3 using the built in wireless
You can spot crossover cables because if you hold the 2 RJ-45 connectors next to each other the cable colour layout won't match, patch cables will match up the colours perfectly
Hope that helps

Could you explain how to connect using a switch/router. i bought an ethernet switch, plug two cables in and connect to the ps3s. lights come on however lan party still doesnt seem to work correctly?!
how would wireless work, but as i said earlier i have no internet connection. the one i am using to reply to this is via a dongle and signal strength is poor.
a step by step guide if possible would be greatly appreciated.
