Runescape Hacking - Need help to PREVENT

My girlfriend's little brother plays runescape and apparently his character keeps getting hacked. He goes through a half-hour long process to get his character back under his control, and upon doing so, all of his stuff is sold.

Do any of you know any preventative measures to take in order to make sure this kind of thing doesn't happen again - or at least have a significantly decreased chance of it happening?

EDIT~ Also, he is NOT a paying member of Runescape, if that makes a difference.

Well first contact Jagex.

Secondly make a password with the following......

Password most contains: uppercase and lowercase letters.
Password most contains: punctuation or symbols.
Password most at least contain 8 characters.
Password most contains: a number.

Thirdly get up in levels and try not to add friends to the friend list unless they are friends who really help you because the other ones can use him.

If none of the above works nothing you can do. Jagex right now may help but they are vary busy with the new updates (Grand Exchange, Spamming, and more.)

Thats gay, i hear there is a LOT of hacking in runescape now, that sucks. My only thought would be to contact jagex or learn to hack and hack it back, if he would know who it was.

The first thing I would do, Is keep ALL of his items in the Bank and create a PIN and be sure its written down. This
can definitely help in case if his account his hacked and so that his items won't get lost.

Ask him to change his password and do it at least every other week. MAKE SURE hes not giving out
his password to people he does not know or sites other than runescape.

Also, make sure he doesn't have a keylogger or another type of virus on your computer, if he has a virus scanner,
run a scan, if he doesn't, try to get them to download one.

Also tell him not to go on to websites that claim to give him money etc.

set up a filter so you can track all the records of peoples actions and IP's, find the right one, and scare him so bad he's forced to stop!

if he's got anything of value, tell him to keep it in the bank unless he needs it. Walking around flaunting anything of worth just makes you a target.

I never considered the idea of a keylogger, but then again, her mother makes online transactions just about daily and has never had anything come up. I'll make sure to recommend AVG and SpyBot. Also, I'm assuming Jagex is the owner/ administrator/ public relations loser for Runescape? If so, does this person have an email address that may be more formal to contact him? I'll also make sure to tell him to make the password complex. He's 11 years old and I'm pretty sure that his password consists of a 3-5 letter word in lower case or something lol.

Thanks for the tips, and if you guys have any more, please share them. I've told my girlfriend to check this thread often.

Jagex is the group of people who created runescape. You can tell your gfs brother to use the report system and fill one out and you will have to wait and see.

gman, I know I don't get it either I have been hacked once because I typed my password into the public chat and somebody saw lost my rune amour. (Thats also when I first started playing Runescape 1) Anyways Since then I have never gone around telling/showing off my stuff and keep my password strong and I'm fine.

I played Runescape for about 2 years and i flaunted my full Zammarok Armour around :P. I was never hacked, i stopped playing about 3 years ago, sold my account for $10 to a friend.. I never changed my password or anything, i did meet like a million a**wholes on that game tho.. dam there where a bunch of a**wholes. I guess none of the people that got mad at me didn't know how to hack. One guy even called me a 'poopy head' lol.

The best way to protect yourself is to keep a secure passcode, avoid suspicious "friends", and use an anti-virus/spyware program. I have Webroot Spy Sweeper and I have had good experience. There is also a program called Window Washer that fully erases temporary internet files and anything a spyware program could use to steal passswords. I reccomend them, but the downside is that they have 12-month payed subscriptions.
This is a sig. You may think that there is something to it, but in fact it is just an ordinary sig.
