Prisoners and health care

I recently learned that prisoners essentialy receive unpaid healthcare benefits from the state.

Considering the amount of law abiding citizens that do not have health care, do you think this is fair?

Why shouldn't they be?
Think about this:
An old guy who owns a little store gets charged with tax evasion and is sent to a white-collar prison and because of that he can't have access to the special medical care he needs because he can't buy anything outside of the prison. If he got arrested for tax evasion without even realizing he did something wrong or put a zero in a wrong place or something like that and is sent to jail, do you think that's fair.
Because of stuff like that, the goverment's made it so everyone gets health care and not just people like my example guy. And because there's no real source of income in a prison, of course the government has to pay for it.

I hope you understand that if some people have the right to it, then others should to from my example.

Depends the circumstances I guess, I mean if it is necessity (insulin for diabetes or w/e) then sure. If something happens to an inmate and they don't have the money then what are they suppose to do? Live with it I guess, but I don't know anything so don't take my word for it.

If a prisoner gets sick, then let the family provide health care, it isn't fair for law abiding tax payers to provide it for outlaws. It will be an incentive to not get locked up if you know that you could get sick and die while doing time.

While prison does limit freedom, it also gives more freedom.

Free food, healthcare, they take care of you. Easy solution if you're poor; go to jail.

thats a hard one, but i mean it not cool though to just let them pretty much "rot" in prision.

Let's just say I'm glad que13x and Yumiko aren't involved in the government... they'd turn prisons into Vietnamese POW camps.

I think it depends on the crime, if they are a mental serial killer let them rot for all I care. It's too complicated, there are too many flaws in the system.

I think prisons should provide:

Food but only once or twice a day

Water to maintain cleanliness and hygiene

Shelter (even a tent will do)

Electricity and climate control is a nice thing to have. think about how much money could be saved if lighting was kept to a minimum? No need to run heat or AC, if it is cold give them blankets If it is hot let them figure it out.

It's for people who commit crimes like tax evasion even if they do it on accident. Should they be malnourished to the point where they're almost dead like you're trying to explain?

It's hard to answer this topic poll because... well... no, it's absolutely not fair... while at the same time, I'd rather have my freedom and no health insurance rather than committing a crime just to receive some benefits. So while it seems unfair, especially in the particular account of health benefits, I can't help but think that it'd be more unfair to be imprisoned.

You gotta keep in mind though... I'm the kind of guy that believes that most crimes should not even be punishable by jail time.
