It is true that the barter system preceeded money however, if you had something no one wanted you were out of luck or you had to find someone to trade what you had so that you could hopefully trade for something you needed. Are you following me? No? Good, this is how complicated the barter system can get. Eventually people traded pieces of metal (iron and bronze) and eventually gold and silver because everyone wanted these metals for their usefulness. This is the earliest form of what we could call money began. Eventually the entire system was standardized (coins) and that is how the monetary system began. I could go deeper if there is interest but I hope I settled the argument.
The programmers you will one day be looking to hire are the ones reading the tech news sites right now.
