How I Used Online Proxy Sites While Staying in China

Hey everyone,

I recently spent some time in China and, as many of you might know, accessing certain websites there can be tricky because of the Great Firewall. I wanted to share my experience using online proxy sites and how they actually worked for me.

First off, I tried a few free online proxies. Honestly, I wasn’t expecting much—free services often come with slow speeds, limited options, or constant ads, but I was curious to see if they could at least help me access blocked content. To my surprise, some of them worked pretty well for casual browsing. I could open news sites, blogs, and even watch a few videos without much trouble. The connection wasn’t perfect, and some sites loaded slowly or blocked certain features, but for light use, it was okay.

What I noticed is that online proxies are great for quick, temporary access. You go to the proxysite, enter the URL you want to visit, and it opens the page through their server, no installation, no login, nothing complicated. For me, this was perfect when I only needed to check something quickly or bypass a minor restriction.

However, there are apparent limitations. Some proxies would disconnect randomly or fail to load more complex websites. Anything that required logging in, streaming, or transferring sensitive data felt unreliable. I wouldn’t use them for work, online banking, or anything personal.

For more consistent access, I ended up combining proxies with a VPN on specific devices. The proxies were faster for quick tasks, while the VPN handled heavier or more sensitive browsing securely.

Overall, my takeaway is that online proxies in China can actually work, but only for light, temporary browsing. They’re not a replacement for a proper VPN if you need privacy, security, or consistent access across multiple sites. But if you’re trying to sneak a peek at blocked content or test something quickly, they’re surprisingly handy.

Has anyone else tried free online proxies in China? I’d love to hear how your experience compares!
