two things are needed for homebrew,
one: a special memory stick (which you create using software)
and two: an pandora's battery or datel tool mode battery.
I was able to make my psp slim homebrewable without a second psp, or buying a second battery. I bought the PSP battery service tool, since I really didn't want to hardmod my battery.

read a lot of tutorials to get as much information as possible.
especially this one: http://pspbrew.com/forum/viewtopic.php?t=11076
it didn't work for me, I had to find a work around, good luck though, try that one first.
