Dial-up isn't as bad as people think. Sure the download rate is slow, but larger files can be downloaded on another computer where it's safer for the end-user anyways (ex: piracy). A 1 min video will load in about 7.5 minutes which isn't too long if you are doing something else worthwhile. You can't use your home phone but you can use the internet to make free calls online. You CAN win things on ebay, and you most certainly can defend yourself against viruses. I'd argue that it's 10,000x harder to defend from viruses when you are on a broadband connection because they infect the computer THAT much faster.
Truth be told, I'm on dial up, and have been for a long time. But look at me, I'm more than fine and have all the games/ applications/ music that I want and I have access to my favorite sites all without shelling out a dime b/c it's free aol (and aol is a good service, just bad customer relations). Still though, I'm going to get a broadband connection soon just to mix it up.
