PSP slim has video-out and is a little bit faster. It also is going to get more attention from SONY for things like Skype that the original PSP won't get.
It's also a little bit 'cheaper.' I don't really like the tray you put the UMD's into but how light it is makes up for that. You'd need to get new earphone controller and new microphone if you get a slim but the USB is still the same. And the original PSP has more homebrew capabilities.
However, there's this thing called the eLoader (if you've been around since the 2.6 era you'd know about it) that it lets you play 1.5 PSP games on the Slim! :D
QQManto!! Yay!

eLoader gives about 25% 1.5 support.

I'd reccomend using Time Machine to get to 1.50, then update to 3.52M33 then what ever you want.

you can just put your psp into usb mode and...poof...you have a "card reader"
Phat 3.71->pandora 1.50->3.90 m33 (Sold on Ebay, suckers)
Slim 3.71->semi-brick->Nand Recovery->DCv3->3.71->3.80 m33-2->3.90 m33-3->4.01 m33-2
Want cintro for 4.01 m33? get cintro_390and Autostart_V4.zip, just follow the readme.

I think he already did the battery before the memory card.
If so, dude, just put the charging cord on the PSP without the battery in and you can turn it on like normal and just do it like that.
