Question about updating PSP system firmware

Hi,
I am new to PSP and this forum, currently my psp is running on 3.03 OE-A, I d like to update it to the lastest homebrew firmware 3.40 I believe.

When I bought the PSP overseas (btw Do PSPs have different hardware specifications? anyway mine is 1006 model), the guy changed the system to homebrew 3.03 for me at the shop, and told me that never try to update it yourself, it might brick the system if it was not done properly.

After doing some research online, it seems quite complicated, Downgraders, DevHook, uClinux didnt make much scene to me,

so I d like to get some experts advices before I zap the system.

Any helps would be really appreciated,

Thank you very much in advance.

PS: can I run PSX games on 3.03 OE-A? I saw "Dead or Alive" PSX for PSP on eMule, is it a real PSX release or Trojan. PSPbrick?

Dont upgrade to 3.40, just go to 3.03 oe-c. Its a lot better and doesnt have near as many bugs as 3.40 oe-a. And you can run ps1 games on 3.03 oe-a and 3.03 oe-c

Yes you can brick your psp by missing steps during downgrade/upgrades. However, the chances of bricking are probably 1 in 213852173562153. A lot of people you pay to do your upgrades/downgrades just tell you that so you'll come back to them and pay them to upgrade again.

Anyways, you can run psx games on 3.03 oe-a. However, if you do want to upgrade to 3.40 oe-a then just download the file from HERE and then read the readme for instructions on how to install it. Its pretty straight forward. The process will probably take you about 10-15 mins max.

If you have any questions on a step to installing, just ask here and myself or someone else will gladly give you a hand.

Thank you very much for your replies, I really appreciated it.

May be a stupid question to ask - what does "downgrade" mean / do?

Do I need to downgrade everytime when I try to update homebrew OS firmware?

Hope to hear from you soon, thanks again.
