Personally, I think Dark Alex's 3.40 OE-A is the best firmware to go with... it's the latest stable firmware release. As far as programs that's all up to you. There's various organizational tools that personally I don't think are necessary when you can just connect your PSP to your PC to do. Why waste space on your memory card... There's iRshell which will allow you to stream stuff from your PC through USB or wireless... but again, I don't use this either.

If you are wanting to do emulation, I have snes9xTYL for SNES, and I had some other emulators, but apparently I deleted them. Anyone else feel free to chime in.

Just check out http://dl.qj.net/PSP/catid/106 if your looking for programs. The popular emulators seem to be like gpSp for gameboy advance emulation, snes9xTYL for snes emulation, Daedalus N64 for nintendo 64 emulation and a lot more that I don't know off hand. I would highly suggest not to use programs that automatically flash your psp so you can have custom themes. Just do it manually. I believe darkpacman made a tutorial about ti in the tutorial section. Just go look for it. Also I suggest jsut to check out the tutorial section for things like converting ps1 games to play on your psp (The custom firmwares have built-in ps1 emulators), and homebrew games or what not. And also playing ISO's (The file format of psp games once transferred to your computer). So yea. Check out the tutorial section first then ask questions. And also like brent said, I suggest to use 3.40OE-A too. It's the most updated and stable release out to date. A lot of our new members would say other wise with the whole M33 line of firmwares. But I believe all the older members would suggest either 3.03OE-C or 3.40OE-A.
