Just because a bunch of people do it doesn't make it legal/illegal. Look at it this way... movies are not free. You pay to see them at a theater, you pay to buy the DVD. You pay for movie channels, and tv networks pay to play them on regular channels as well. When you download them, you are getting it for FREE... technically it is stealing which is why companies have gone through so much trouble to copyright their work and work on DRM and such.
Not saying I don't download, but just getting it out there.
P2P programs such as limewire are the worst. P2P is dead because it is incredibly unreliable and unsafe. Torrents are the next step up (utorrent is a program). You can get on private trackers but you have to find and sign up for them first. For example, sites like pirate bay, bit junkie, torrent portal, and the like are NOT private. Anyone can link to them and grab the torrents and use their trackers. Private trackers require you to be logged into their website before you can use their tracker and download content.
If you can pony up the dough, newsgroups are the shiznit when it comes to downloading. Download speeds are only dependent on your own internet connection. My apartment's internet at the moment is a little slow, so I download at 1.8 MB/sec... I go to my friend's apartment and I can download there at over 5 MB/sec.
