DarkPacMan's New Graphics Card ; )

Read em and weep little boys, girls, and crait - whatever the hell you are. Ol' Papa DPM has got some new hardware coming in.

How does an ATi HD 4890 1gb graphics card sound? I got an MSI version from eBay used for $164.99 - the same one as in this Newegg link right here, but without paying $50-60 more. I will have an 8800gt 512mb version Nvidia card to sell off online or something, if any of you are interested in a great card.

I got one of those a while back when it was still a prototype.. I had to give it back because my computer screen wasn't DVI.

You don't need DVI - you can use a DVI to VGA converter - like I'm going to do.

EDIT - Some models from other brands of this card use one 6-pin connector and an 8-pin connector at the same time, but some use two 6-pin connectors. I see 3 pins coming from each of the connectors from the top view, which means there should be 3 pins underneath those and be a dual 6-pin power input I think... which is what I need. Hopefully I don't need an 8-pin also because when I get this baby I wanna crank the sh*t out of some of my games like Grand Theft Auto 4 and Mirror's Edge - which has niiiice graphics on my PC already.

Well, duh, but I didn't want to wait to get cord- No, actually it was PCI Express and I didn't have any compatable ports. Just regular PCI.

How did you get the card as prototype then if you can't even run it? or... why? lol

But yeah, it's a beast of a card. It pretty much ONLY loses to the 4870x2 (regarding ATi cards)- which is two 4870 cards on one card instead of just one 4890. In any case, I don't like those types of cards because they put off too much heat and the vents on that card are very small and put most of the heat in the case - something I don't want to do. The 4890 is pretty much the second best card that ATi has come out with, and the best "single GPU card" on the market, so I'm looking forward to cranking some games out at crazy frames.

This card is usually about 5% better in most tests than the GTX 260 from Nvidia, and I needed an ATi card so I can take advantage of crossfireX technology and slap a SECOND one of these in my rig later on down the road so I decided to go the ATi route.

I'm not rich but, I am an enthusiast and I demand good stuff ;)

And Alex, I told you that GTA 4 would rape your computer lol. I couldn't play it right until I had a quad core at 3.1ghz and I use a 8800gt 512mb. Later this week, hopefully, I'll be rollin' with the big boys and using my 4890 1gb ;) can't wait.

And on another note, here's a look at my next upgrade. What do you guys think of this monitor?

That monitor? All I can describe it as is "Sex." Like I said, rich. I'd be a pretty demanding enthusiast as well if I could afford it :p

I was wondering why I only got 30 average frames in GTAIV, I only have a Q6600 @ 2.4GHz.

Wellllllll then you're REALLY going to hate me when I tell you that your quad Q6600 got beat by this processor from AMD.

THAT'S RIGHT!!! IT'S A DUAL CORE... err... but DPM said quad... huh? How does that work?

Well little voice inside my head, what DPM did, in his infinite wisdom and brewery expertise, is use that dual core processor and the Gigabyte MA790X-UD4P motherboard and tweaked the settings to UNLOCK 2 other cores. The processor, at default, is 3.1ghz, but I've overclocked it to 3.6ghz on all 4 cores now and since my processor uses Hyper Transport 3.0 - it pretty much rapes your processor in most stuff now ;) In fact... when I really was getting experimental and seeing what it could do, I eventually got it to goto 3.8ghz in quad core. Don't believe me?

Image

Oh how I love AMD... I paid just over $100 and I'm spanking the piss out of the Q6600 by almost twice the frames and a weaker graphics card. I get about 57 FPS average in GTA IV now with my 8800gt 512mb so just wait til I get my greedy little hands on that 4890 ;)
