I could come up with a few plausible explanations.
The hole filled up with water and then algae turned the water green.
The hole took to vegetation faster because it was closer to the water table than the higher ground above it.
The hole is actually a fire pit used to burn trash and just looks green because green was added to make the forest look more lush.
As for why anyone is looking in South America, well that is their business.
And they will remember...
