MAME Problems

I am not sure what to do. Every other emulation is running great but when I go to try MAME the program starts up and I get a GUI screen showing the games I have on the SD card my Wiimote goes dead and I have to shutdown my system and start over again. I have tried the Wii classic pad as well as the Wavebird but I get nothing. So hopefully someone can help me out.

I am too suffering from MAME problems, it sometimes loads, sometimes crashes. When I do get the emulator up and running, which looks very much like the MAME emulator on my PC I can't control it.
Anyone know what remote I'm supposed to use?
