why do some emulators freeze on their main menus?

hi, ive had trouble with half my emulators freezing on their menu screens where your supposed to load roms.
snesx works and hugo pc is ok, but wii64 and mame lock up so bad everytime and i have to actually switch off at the power point to get the wii restarted. im running the on 3.3E and have installed the correct twilight/homebrew thing twice just to make sure... im also not using any gamecube cards. is there a way to get around this without downgrading to 3.2 , any help appreciated, just wanna play roms! thanks wiibrewologists
