am i wasting my time with homebrew?

Hi all

After much research into what installing the homebrew channel would mean i am left massively disappointed.
the mplayer doesnt work , neither do most of the applications i have tried..

all that seems to happen is that my wii freezes and i have to unplug it from the wall to restart.
please help with some basics

how do i get dvds to play
how do i play old school games such as pilot wings 64 etc

and is it possible to actually download free wii games anywhere such as with the r4 card on the ds

thanks in advance

Re: am i wasting my time with homebrew?

dvds to play-what firmware has you got?

After much research into what installing the homebrew channel would mean

uh.installing homebrew channel means installing a channel that makes you able to run homebrew apps such as emulators, linux, mplayer, games and so.

old school games - there are some in nintendo virtual console archive, but you need a classic controller,or gamecube controller for most of them.also there are emulators, for non-nintendo things, but you still need external controllers.

exactly the kind of sarcastic unhelpful reply i was expecting.

I know what the definition of homebrew is thanks mr dictionary... i meant as far as messing up my hardware and allowing unathorised programs into my machine

not one peice of helpful information. for people who seem to want to spread the homebrew message you really do make it as hard as possible to learn about this geek clique.

apologies to all the geuinely helpful people but this kind of answer is typical of what im experiencing

PLEASE if anyone does have constructive help it would really be appreciated ... otherwise this is far too much hassle to play cheesy chess games and I already have a dvd player thanks!

hey,i am not english,i thought you dont know what is homebrew channel.

you can always destroy or harm your wii,but the risk in installing homebrew channel (hc for short) is very small. And programs are the same.99 % of Homebrew apps are just ran, installing, configuring, editing nothing. The 1% are cIOS downgraders,IOS downgraders,Any Title Deleter, and other apps that are made to edit.I got no idea what are you asking for. What do you need now?

ok mate apologies

i have tried querying a number of forums and the amount of abuse given because i dare be new to this is unbeleivable ... again apologies.

here is where Im at:

Ive done the twilight hack and installed homebrew channel. - no probs
ive even downloaded a starter pack with some apps i chose to make it easy
i followed instructions (and youtube videos) on how to install the m player

ive even repeated the process with different apps but all that happens is things load to the title screens and my wii freezes and no dvds play.

im a musician and if someone wanted me teach em how to tune a guitar i would just say here mate - this is an automatic tuner

what im after is not loads of techy speak that i have to research... just someone who knows what their doing to say ... here mate use these links this is what ive done ... and if that doesnt work then your stuck ... but good luck

that would be an ideal reply

i would like to:

play dvds
play old school games such as pilotwings (install and use emulators?? how?)
and any other cool stuff that will impress my friends!!

i know loads of people who would love this but as alll im getting are problems i dont really wanna recommend anything so far..

and to tell you the truth ... is this worth it really??

again apologies and appreciation for your time

Ok i will try and help you out here. Look to the top of the forums and i mean all the forums look to the left hand side you will see a menu Brew Menu in there you will find WiiPack Generator Packgen for short. Click that it will take you to a whole huge list of programs this includes emulators and apps. If you have the Brew channel downloaded and installed allready dont worry about the Twilight hack or the brew channel. Now once that is done you can go get all the roms you need for the emulators and install them in the correct rom folder. Like the Snes roms in the Snes rom folder and so on. Now another item i suggest and i love is the Homebrew browser it can be found here http://wii.brewology.com/?page=fileInfo&cid=16912&d=945
This will allow you to find the homebrew you want and download them if you dont want to use the Packgen. That would be the easiest way if that is what you are looking for. I hope this helped. If not PM me and i will talk one on one with you and help you through this.
My Wii code is 8199 7181 7051 1953

Homebrew for the Wii is still fairly young. Some of the apps take many revisions to perfect. I know DVDX plays dvd's but at the moment, I think the DVD's only read at 3x instead of the normal 6x which can give you some problems like slow load time and some disc read errors. The code exists for 6x but very few dev teams have it. Once they all learn how to do that backing up games and running dvd's should be great. Until then, the best things I would say are the latest backup loader and installing virtual console games.

PS - the problem was a combination of not storing the roms in the correct places and some of the apps eg - Tetris not recognising the wii remote at all and not responding to the off button on the console so it looked like it had just frozen

the mplayer simply didnt work tho - thanks for the tutorial

oh yeah that and im new/crap at this - ha!
