Natal and Why It Will Work [Includes Proof]

Okay, so you guys may or may not know that I'm in Florida this week for a vacation and today we went to Epcot. (One of Disney World's parks. The one with the big golf ball.)
It has a lot of new technology like this facial recognition thing, but the best part of the day was whenever we went to Turtle Talk with Crush. You know Crush, right? From Finding Nemo?
Image
Basically, Crush comes out and makes a few jokes and then asks if anyone has any questions. This is designed for children so they sit in the front row and he calls on them. They proceed to ask the question and he answers it!! It's completely unscripted!
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Turtle_Talk_with_Crush
It was amazing. I thought it was fake for a good 5 minutes until he called on my brother. He asked how did turtles learn to swim and he was like, "Dude." and was talking about how they only walk to get into the water when they're born and he just kept walking and eventually, he just swam. He was going through the motions of walking and ended up doing a swimming motion.
It was amazing. Some kid asked what he ate and he said, "Dude, do you see this grass under me? That's what I grub on. What about you?" She listed stuff including borritos and he was like, "What are buh- buh- borrrrrrritos? Do they make you bubble?"
Whenever he called on people, he said stuff like, "Girl with the fur on her noggin' in the second row. Yeah, the one with the blue shirt on." It was really cool. He looked around and watched who he was talking to. This is where Natal could be heading. It opened in 2004 so don't think this is new.
Here's a video: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=FjOSIAUOcec
Haha, some baby screamed really high pitched when he was talking and he said, "Whoa, does someone here speak dolphin?"
He asked this kid where he was from and he was like, "Mah, mah, mah." Cause he was so young. Crush was like, "Mah, mah, map? Where at on the map?"

Still think that Natal will fail?

I can't wait for it to come out! Since I saw it at E3 I really wanted to see what it could do. I think I've mentioned it on the forum earlier, but I wanna play a fighting game with it! Although it might be a little tough to implement.

The PS3 one is a different realm of playing games. I love it. I think they will be equally as cool.

Today, I saw another Disney thing in Disney's Magical Kingdom. (The main park)
It was the Laugh Room. A Monsters, Inc. thing where they have stand up comedians and interact with the audience in the same way as Talk Time with Crush. It was awesome. Haha.

If Natal ends up being anything like this game

Image

crossed with the Wii it will FAIL. Everyone that I know that owns a Wii hasn't touched it in months.

Voice and motion gaming are gimmicks and get old fast. Anyone know anyone that still messes with DDR? How about Karaoke Revolution?

I know NATAL is supposed to be some sort of AI and doesn't compare 100%. I mean sure using profanity on your NATAL equipped 360 will be cool and good for a laugh but it will get old, fast.

Gameboy, Super Nintendo and Game Cube all had a bunch of gimmicks like this. They all failed.

$ony has the "Eye" Toy that only has like 21 games EVER released since 2003. "Eye" toy has sold roughly 10 million units world wide compared to 135 million PS2s. That is less than 1% for every PS2 by comparison. If you think "Eye" toy is cool you can buy one for $8 here: http://www.usedvideogamestore.com/servl ... TOY/Detail

Natal like systems just haven't done well in the past and I don't see them doing any better in the future because people that avoid talking to people over their game consoles won't want to talk to their game consoles either. Makes sense?

Who here wants to rush to the Epcot center and chat with Crush? Certainly not me.
The programmers you will one day be looking to hire are the ones reading the tech news sites right now.

And they will remember...

Your comment about the Wii is your opinion, (i doubt you have many friends with wiis)

Imo Natal won't do well, as the above quote says its a gimmick, And its not AI, its most likely programmed with ALOT of responces, If it is AI It will cost Alot and the space the console will be using may even go up to the 100GBs as with AI its need to save the information its learned.

I hope it goes well, but personly giving it a miss

I really don't understand why you guys are talking so bad about natal when it hasn't even been released or anything. I for one won't say something won't be successful when I haven't got to mess with it myself. I haven't even seen the ps3 thing until I just watch the video and it looks like a upgraded Wii to me... and they are both gimics! IMO it is very hypocritical to say both the Wii and natal are gimics while the ps3 thing isn't a gimic, or vice versa. And who was it that said a little while ago that the paint aspect of natal was stupid? I haven't watched the actual segment about the painting part but I just watched the ps3 video and they were painting on a brick wall! How is that any different? Wii already did what the ps3 is doing and the ps2 eye already did what natal is trying. I don't see how a Wii with a ball on the remote with better graphics will succeed where the Wii didn't, and I don't see how a remade ps2 Eye thing will succeed when it only has more features, of course that is through several others viewpoint if I was to think similar to their logic.

But really, I don't think we can criticize neither until there is more information on them both though, because I like the whole motion sensing aspect of video games if designers can implement it well in their games. And ofc if the hardware itself is accurate. Either that or both will fail because the Wii surely didn't succeed with its gimic, and neither will the other two big players.

I do want to go talk to that turtle now though :p

Look at the Wii sales compared to other consoles then, rethink. Imo Nintendo went into the wrong direction with the wii, but im sure they don't care as they making millions.

I forgot the PS3 was coming out with a similar gimmick or I would have mentioned it too. I don't think much of the PS3. I consider the PS3 nothing more than a PS2 with built in blueray player. This argument is on another thread so I will stop right there.

What I stated about NATAL and the other gimmicks was my opinion of course and am not saying anyone is wrong in their thinking. My opinion is based on my observation of similar gimmicks in the past and a bit of research and that is how I draw my conclusions. Who says we have to agree with every post on this board?

Nintendo Wii does sell more consoles than any other currently but it has been the most affordable next gen console for years now. Personaly I am not impressed with the games library but that is just me. I never meant to imply that the Wii sucks, only that it is a gimmick that has quickly lost its flare with me and everyone I know. Anyone that disagrees is welcome to open up another thread addressing this.

While on the topic of NATAL I would like to see this development terminated in favor of virtual reality visors. To me exploring a virtual world with a complete 360 degree field of view would be way more fun than finger painting on a brick wall.

I do personally believe these things are gimmicks. I know that the Wii's motion sensing was never fun and everyone else does to. Okay. We're passed that.

What I'm trying to say is that everyone is saying "We'd have to wait to see the technology when it comes out to see it." Well I've seen it! It's been out since 2004!!!!
Please, just watch the video link. This isn't about how Wii failed or how back the Wii's library is or how much Nintendo is making on a crappy console.

Watch the video link. It doesn't do it much justice because he didn't answer that many questions that time, but please.

What I meant by that was partly because others said it failed, I own a Wii myself but I haven't touched it in at least 3-4 months, and besides it is a lot more affordable than the 360 and ps3. I don't believe it is quite reliable to compare sales figures of several products due to the widely diversified audience, price range, and difference in longevity though. It's quite obvious when a product is cheaper then another product that it will sell more units if both are quite popular.

But discussing whether the Wii has succeeded in the virtual department of video games is redundant and besides, there is no real answer to that. But if you think the whole point of my post was to state that the Wii was unsuccessful then you need to reread my post. The fact that members of this forum are nitpicking posts and trying to disprove someone about something that they said, which was isn't their intention of the post, is just spam in my opinion. Use common sense, it's not that hard. Were talking about the success of the upcoming "gimics", not debating about the Wii's success.

And I seriously doubt Crait that anyone has used the technology that the natal is taking advantage of in such a way that Microsoft is. Sure the type of technology has been around, but it hasn't really been applied in such a way that Microsoft is trying to use it. I.E. In the commercial market, for video game enthusiasts. That's why I said I would prefer not to judge the natal before I see more about it.

I think Microsoft and Sony are trying to open their consoles into a wider market. I bet in many video game playing households there are at least 2 newer consoles, an xbox/ps3 and a Wii. The big kids/adults play on the xbox/ps3 and the smaller kids play on the Wii. If the xbox and ps3 can get similar motion sensing as the Wii, they could be trying to make a sort of "all-in-one" console fit for the whole family.

In the end though, motion sensing technology won't be a deal breaker until it advances way into the future. If they can make a game that will let me do realistic light saber battles, i'll be all over that. But until then I'll stick to my ps3. As many of you know, I own a Wii. I'm moving to Australia from Japan and literally never play the thing, so I shipped it home to the States. When I do get time to play games between work and other responsibilities, I want to RELAX. I don't want to be jumping around all over the place holding 2 different controllers, nunchuck cable hitting me in the face while I furiously shake the controller to get the damn game to read my motions CORRECTLY. While the Wii was a lot of fun in the beginning, it quickly got old and I can assure you most Wii owners over 18 feel the same way.

This isn't to say that Sony and Microsoft's attempts are stupid or in vain. I'm waiting for the day when I can jump all over the living room battling Darth Vader, and without experimentation in the field the technology just won't develop.
