I'm now dualbooting- What OS do you use?

I only have 2 gigs of RAM, so I'm dual booting 7 and XP. I only use the XP partition for virtual machines. I have an XP virtual machine and a server 2003 virtual machine. After I pass my 70-270 exam I'll be installing a Vista virtual machine. If/when I pass 70-290 exam, probably on to server 2008.

XP VM was so I could use it for self study labs. It helps a lot especially when you are messing with various advanced config options, especially when you apply security policies. Even just messing with TCP/IP settings. When I'm done, I just close it and don't save settings and I can open it back up to a fresh machine.

I had 2 server VM's that I use for the 70-290 labs and to play with Active Directory. Vista will be set up for the same reason I have XP.

My mum recently bought a laptop so she gets Win7 for free once its officialy out in the UK.
We are going to get it.

7 is NOT XP. It's closer to Vista but still its own OS. If you look at my example there's one perfectly good reason to dual boot those two systems. Memory savings. Windows 7, while better than Vista, is still a bit of a memory hog when it comes to visualizations. So I boot up XP and enjoy lots of free RAM to use for my virtual machines.

Linux is a novelty OS. The only reason most people have it is just to say "I use Linux." There's a reason people don't pay for it...

That's only if your computer has hardware virtualization, which my dell lappy doesn't so I can't use 7's built-in virtual machine support. Microsoft's free Virtual PC doesn't run on 7 either because it has its own virtual product (catch 22).

If you just want the XP experience and have the hardware for virtualization, then go for a virtual PC. But if you are in a situation like mine, want a less resource hungry OS, then you gotta dual boot.

I have no need to use an OS with lower system requirements with a 3.6ghz quad core processor and 8gb of RAM, but for compatibility I have to dual boot sometimes. I've never once used the "XP Mode" or w/e on Win7 yet either... but I'm not sure if I'd like that more than dual-booting anyways.

I look at dual-booting kind of like a "guest" account on the computer. I can lock my partition entirely and let people use Vista and it's like having two computers in one in a sense rather than having two "accounts" on one OS.

Yeah, I have a 1505 but when I downloaded Intel's processor ident. program, it says it doesn't support it. That and when I tried to install the VM add-on for 7 it said it couldn't. We obviously have different processors. I didn't choose this laptop anyway. It was my moms, but when I moved to Japan I only had a desktop and couldn't afford to buy a laptop before I left. I'm definitely getting a new laptop once I can afford to.

DPM- You can look at VM's the same way. When you create one, the hard drive it uses is a file. The only way that local resources can be accessed is if you create a "network share" for the VM. If you don't create one, then you can't touch anything from within the VM. And if you don't need that OS anymore, you just delete the virtual hard disk file and your disk space is instantly restored. Need more hard disk space for your VM? Then just create another virtual hard disk! Plus, there's the added bonus of instantly being able to get to the VM and instantly returning to your main OS or using both simultaneously.
