The reason Mac remains expensive is because they won't sell their operating system or give it away for free. Instead, they only bundle their operating system with their computers, so people who want to pay more... for... well... I don't know why, but if you want to pay more, you can get a more EXCLUSIVE operating system but that doesn't mean that it's "better". For every major aspect of a Mac operating system there is almost always an equal or better equivalent in the Windows world... not to mention that some of the open source stuff that people make is SICK.
I've spent most time on Ubuntu 9.10 and while I THOROUGHLY enjoyed my experience, for the most part, incompatibility issues with certain programs/ software/ games aggravated me since I like to play the latest and greatest games at maximum settings. WINE is a program that brings some compatibility from Windows to Linux, but doesn't do it well enough, and the other option is to pay for a program that is only slightly better.
Windows will remain the best for now because it has such a wide commercial customer base. You can make the point that Windows is famous because "they are famous", but "they are famous" for one huge reason. Microsoft sells their operating system. Mac sells computers. And Linux is almost a non-issue when comparing the other two giants.
