YouTube requires cell for new accounts?

I decided to make a new account on youtube.
However I have learned that youtube requires people now to use their cell phone
when verifying their account.

I for one am not at all pleased with this.
I have had a bad experience once with sites sending spam messages to my phone
and it's cost be tons and tons of money as they were coming non-stop.

This is the most stupidest thing YouTube has ever done I swear.

Well it does it for a lot of people.
Some I guess it doesn't do it for.

I however have failed to make an account all night.

Google accounts require cell phones.. since google now owns youtube it redirects you.

What an awful idea. What if you don't own a cell? I guess it cost money now to create an account so if you are poor you don't get to play. Terrible terrible terrible.

I managed to finally make another account.

Still I'm never going to give google my phone number.

Go to YouTube.jp and when you sign up, set your location to Japan.

That seems pretty invasive to me, I dont really see any purpose to it....
