Recently I was rendered useless by my laptop blowing the proverbial gasket and quitting on me, in my frustration at being unable to go online I bought a cheap NOKIA 6630 handset (£45 refurbished - £120 new) a data cable and some basic software (aprox. £15) with the idea of being able to go and at the least text talk in the forums ( you know ’’C U L8’er’’ that sort of thing) but to my shock and horror i discovered a huge limitation to my browsing imposed by my network provider (3-UK) despite the handset’s massive capabilities.
In frustration i made my way to a local internet cafe and after a short delusion and another dip into my wallet I googled the phones OS (symbian), and was overjoyed to find this open source software had a little known programme called OPERA an open source browser for the 6630 yea!, so after a very quick download and installation the web was open to me (even a limited version of PSPCRAZY!).
However even with this I wasn’t satisfied, the keypad on the 6630 blows! So I started looking for more open source software, initially only looking for an onscreen QWERTY keyboard, but to my surprise I came across a very interesting little link that led me to a 6630 site that was discussing a way to use there handsets as a router for their PSP’s this peaked my interest and focused my desire to browse with my PSP, in the end though there were three main avenues of thought........
1, Link a USB data cable into a pc router box via a USB hub.
2, Find a homebrew pack that allows a 6630’s Bluetooth system to link to the PSP’s WI-FI. (Google it! I’m sure someone will find a way)
3, Find any old Pc with a USB add a MAX, WI-FI LINK and go online via your Handset via Opera!
ok this is a temporary fix at best and so I’m working on option two and will post that up when i get it working but to get to where i am you will need the following....
a, 1x MAX USB WI-FI gateway.
b, 1x NOKIA 6630 (on contract although I’m working on pay as you go) and USB cable pack. With OPERA installed and a good provider for your phone (try O2 or Orange, 3-UK sucks)
c, 1x USB linker (try a USB multi tap or Bluetooth Dongle £18 ) & a power source. (still working on a way to power and run the link without a PC)
link the whole thing together and off you go!......
.....ok that’s the simple way!
Option 2 involves a lot more work but will result in total freedom from cables and is a work in progress more info later! ARIES0968
