quick questions about homebrew/firewares

so if i had 1.5 firmware, i could basically play any downloaded games...which include the new ones released in the future with only 1.5? and the only point to upgrade to a higher custom firmware is to get the updates/patches/fixes, or would i have to upgrade the firmware in order to play future releases?

sorry for the hassle but i was pretty stumped after going through the forum

you need to emulate later firmwares to play store bought umd discs this includes downloaded versions. The newer games will need a newer firmware to play. All homebrew should play on 1.5 though.

only on 1.5 you can't play any new games, but on custom firmware you can get as much
homebrew as you want and any UMD game you can play.

1.50 is not the firmware I would recommend anymore, however. You do need to get a psp that is capable of GETTING to firmware 1.50 though. That is the task at hand. Once at version 1.50 you can load custom firmware on that baby and make things nice and easy-going for you ;) As of right now I'd suggest firmware 3.03 oe-c as the custom firmware of choice, but many people are opting to use version 3.40 oe-a because it has a better built-in playstation 1 emulator. It really depends on what the end-user wants out of their psp.

be sure when before your buying a psp, look on the back of where the bar code and is should be labeled
"PSP-1001 K yada yada" and make sure to get the one that says "A" THATS the psp 1.5 firmware and then
you'll be able to upgrade.

I saw PSPortable thread showing the letter codes about it and it was pretty helpful.

The letter codes aren't so helpful anymore because Sony mixes it up... but really, if you buy a new psp get one from the back of the shelf. As long as it has a firmware under 3.03 then you will be good.

awesome..thanks guys haha solved my problem =D
ohh mm.. but would running devhook be better? i know its safer and easier a bit for a beginner but umm
would that mean iw ouldnt have to update? or would the newer firmwares needed to play the newer games become
and issue again? i think i'd rather go for the firmware downgrade to 1.5 and upgrade to the 3.03 oe c

Devhook is actually MORE advanced and harder for beginners to understand, but if you are using devhook, it's impossible to "brick" or "ruin" the psp. Bricking is a term used to describe an error in the flash files of the psp - which makes the psp turn on but show nothing on the screen/ turn off (which makes it just as useful as a brick).

If I were you, I'd use version 3.03 oe-c. It is easy to understand and gives a handful of features ;)
