I've never bricked a PSP, or semi-bricked, or anything close. Got the PSP July 17th, 2005, and I can proudly say that I'm not stupid like beatz... 
j/k. The best advice I can give is just to make sure you know how much space you have left on your flash0, and to make sure you know EXACTLY how much space the files you are flashing take up. As long as you have space left over at the end, you're safe.
I did, however, acquire a bricked PSP, but it wasn't from my doing (2nd PSP).
