Signal Strength Issues *PROBLEM FIXED*

Ok...

My Modem/router (Speedstream 6300) is located in my basement, My XBox 360 is located on the 2nd floor. I purchased the microsoft wireless networking adapter for my 360. Tested it out a few days and the signal strength from my modem/router to the xbox was very poor resulting in laggy online play. I ended up returning the wireless adapter in hope to find an alternate solution. So my question is, what sort of solution can i use in this scenario...

Right now i have been looking at the linksys wireless gaming adapter, PlugLink 9650 Ethernet adapter from Asoka, and Asoka HomePlug PL9650 from this link...

Also, just out of curiousity, is it possible to run 2 dsl modems instead of going the route i listed above, or will the modems interfere with each other since theyre both connecting to the same connection?

Well no matter which wireless way you choose the structure of your house is going to dampen the signal. The signal has to cross to floors, with carpet and structural framing. Other wireless devices in the house, like cordless phones, can also cause interference. My suggestions would be these:

A. Move the router closer to the 360

B. Move the 360 closer to the router

C. Run an ethernet cable

D. I don't know if this is an actual option but it might be something to check into. Place another router on a computer closer to the 360, like say the first floor. Then the signal would go from the basement to the first floor computer to the router on the first floor to the 360 on the 2nd floor.

I know all of these suck but if you are really stuck with the configuration you have you might be limited on options.

if its close to your computer with internet just bridge the connection to your computer via an ethernet card.. if not, go out and buy a wireless access point.. it just looks like a little router or modem and will just relay the signal further.. there not that expensive.. its what I have to do here since my computer and gaming room are in separate rooms.. works like a champ

that will work but you need a spare router because the router is a xbox 360 only router basically it turns your router into a gateway for your 360 anyways i wouldnt suggest using wireless signal im not sure on what you can do but you could buy a long donkey ethernet cable and run it up through where your cable hole is and try that if its still to short by 2 of them and by a ethernet connecter but i think the ethernet connecter is way to expensive for a peice of block my friend got it for 18 bucks but yea those are my suggestions

yea, they make things like that.. most of the time its turning a wireless signal into an ethernet port from what I have seen in the past.. there might be repeaters I dont know.. I know they make repeaters that plug into the wall for the Wireless DMX signals we use in the lighting industry.. so I would assume they would..

but as for the ones I was talking about that I know about.. it wouldn't be of much help.. cause all it does is bridge the wireless signal and convert it to the Ethernet output it has for you to plug it into whatever.. so if your signal isn't that strong to begin with, its not going to help..

like I was saying.. repeater is probably going to be your best bet.. unless you want to build a bi-quad antenna.. which we have.. its awesome.. if you don't know what it is, its pretty much a direct tv dish turned into a wifi antenna that can go about 5 miles at its max... got one givin to us, an old direct tv dish that is.. and cost us $15 to make it.. google it .. it rocks..

EDIT: oh yea.. and about your hooking up 2 dsl modems.. that's pretty much not an option.. cable modem is a little dif, there are some complicated ways to do it, but dsl is different.. to my knowledge, its not possible without some modification of hardware and possibly even extra software before it even hits the dsl modem....

Thanks everyone for their input... I remember darkpacman trying to make a bi-quad antenna a couple months back without success, i might look into that if it boosts the signal greatly. I'll most likely end up trying out something that xial had since he reported having the same issue in the past and fixed it.

I'm still open to further suggestions tho.

Problem fixed...i just went out and bought a linksys usb wireless adapter for my computer and put the modem by my 360 for it to plug into...signal fluctuates between 20% and 30% but stable enough to do what i need it for on the computer.
