Every PSP has a firmware, go to the XMB then Settings -> System Settings -> System Information and it should be there.

in order to get on custom firmware, you'll need to create the pandora's battery and the special memory stick with the files on it to put you on custom firmware. Do you own a phat or slim psp?

The Custom firmware installer programs are HOMEBREW, so the official firmware psps can't run them.. except for 1.50 and lower.

well you have to have one or the other haha, most likely you have a phat psp, which is the original model. You have a phat psp if there is an IR port on the top, or if the WLAN switch is on the left bottom side. Also the phat psp has the OPEN switch to open the disc slot, the slim doesnt. I bet you have a phat. If it is white and ISNT a Darth vader psp then it is a phat.

The only way to change your region code to play different region's movies is to have a custom firmware on your psp.
(Although, honestly I don't know why you're buying those stupid UMD movies anyway)

Well, you'll need to use the Pandora's hack to install a custom firmware on your psp. We have 2 different tutorials on how to do this in our tutorials section. Both will work for you since you have a fat psp. From there you can go into recovery mode and change your region.

Here are the links to the tutorials. Both will work for you:
http://www.pspbrew.com/forum/viewtopic. ... 1551#91551
http://www.pspbrew.com/forum/viewtopic.php?t=9208

Please read through these tutorials so you can see what's involved in this process. If you have any questions please read through some topics in the help section or search for your answer. If you still cannot find the answers you need, please post in the 'help' section.

Good luck!
